Zheng said on Saturday that she would be out for weeks, if not months following arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow, and on Monday her withdrawal from the US Open at the end of August was confirmed.
But on Tuesday, organisers of the Billie Jean King Cup – formerly the Federation Cup and contested annually between women's national teams – announced that Zheng had been selected by her country for this year's edition, to take place from September 16 to 21.
The organisers also said: 'Nations can make up to four changes to their squads until one day before the event start date.'
Should world No 6 Zheng feature in Shenzhen, she will have recovered from surgery and regained match fitness within two months.

Also picked by China were German Open finalist Wang Xinyu, world No 36 Yuan Yue, Zhang Shuai, Jiang Xinyu and captain Liu Feng.
